01 / Starting point

For a year, we paid attention to how others saw. Now we want to show what we notice.

Third year · third group exhibition

It started with five people. It became a community.

In autumn 2024 we were still meeting as BMI Fotoklub Wien. We took photographs, looked at them together and talked about why some images stayed with us.

At the beginning of 2026, that community became VIPACH — Vienna Photo Art & Creative Hub. More people joined from different backgrounds, so English naturally became our common language. The Hungarian roots are still part of who we are.

SPONTANEOUS is our third group exhibition in Vienna. We are not trying to show one shared style. What interests us is almost the opposite: how differently people can look at the same world.

The name

A name about something slowly coming into its own.

VIPACH stands for Vienna Photo Art & Creative Hub. When we chose the name, another meaning also felt close to us: in our own story, vipach is connected with ripening, developing and coming to fruition.

That is also close to how we think about photography. The goal is not to make every image technically perfect. It is to learn to see more clearly, and over time understand what genuinely matters to us.

Photography history

A few of the greats. One well-known image at a time.

During the year we spent time with photographers who changed the way photography could be used and understood. Here we introduce a few of them through one of their well-known images. Follow a name to read the story behind it.

04 / The turn

SPONTANEOUS

Sometimes something interesting happens when, for a moment, we stop trying to control it.
In the spirit of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi

Our first working title was In the footsteps of the great photographers. It made sense. Their images and stories had been with us throughout the year.

Then the community changed. New people arrived with different experience and a different way of looking. At some point it became clear that we did not want to follow anyone’s footsteps. We had looked carefully at what they saw. Now we wanted to show what we see.

SPONTANEOUS is therefore not built around one subject. It is about the moments that make us stop: a light, a gesture, an odd situation, something ordinary that perhaps only one person notices.

Curatorial and organising team

Behind the exhibition

SPONTANEOUS brings together twenty photographs. By now, that has become a natural scale for our exhibitions: enough room for very different points of view, while each image can still have space of its own.

Before SPONTANEOUS

Two exhibitions came before this one.

Each began with a different question. One asked how we see Austria. The other asked which single image feels closest to who we are.

As I Like It Austria

Austria and Vienna as we experienced them: not as a guidebook, but through personal impressions, everyday details and the perspective we brought with us.

Picture of My Life

Fifteen Hungarian photographers answered the same question with twenty photographs: if you could show only one image of yourself, which one would it be?

We looked at how they saw. Now we show how we see.
